Chat lets staff, parents and students send each other short text messages inside Qalamora, without sharing personal phone numbers. Only the people in a conversation can read it. Parents can never message other parents.
Before you start
- The Communication module must be on, and your role needs chat access. Teachers, the front desk, accountants and the principal have it by default; parents and students have it through their login.
- The principal decides who may message whom in Settings > Chat (see below).
Steps
- Open Communication > Chat. Your conversations are listed on the left, newest first, with an unread count.
- Click New message. Search for a person by name. The list only shows people you are allowed to message.
- Write and send. Type in Write a message. Enter sends, Shift+Enter adds a new line.
- Read replies. New messages appear on their own every few seconds while the page is open. A notification also appears in the bell when someone writes to you after a quiet spell.
Groups and class announcements
Staff can click New group, give it a Group name and choose people, or pick Or a whole class or section to add the parents of its students. Any group with parents or students in it is Announcements only: only staff can post, so parents never talk to each other there. A group can have up to 1,000 members.
Mute, close and report
- Mute stops notifications for a busy group. Muted conversations are not counted in your unread badge.
- Close conversation keeps the history but nobody can send new messages.
- Report sends the conversation to the school administration with your reason.
People with the moderation permission (the principal by default) see these under Reported chats. They can read only a reported conversation, every read is written to the audit log, and they can Resolve it or Resolve and close chat.
Who can message whom
The principal sets this in Settings > Chat:

Staff can always message other staff. A parent sees only the staff in the roles you allow, and never sees anyone's phone number or email in the chat.

Chat sends text only. Files and photos cannot be attached yet.
